Come November 14th 2012, Door County’s largest and possibly most exquisite cottage goes on the auction block.

Built by Chicago philanthropist Judith Blazer in 1993, “Sur la Baie” is one of the largest single-family residences in Wisconsin, according to Hilco Real Estate Auctions LLC, which is in charge of the auction.

Designed with the French tradition in mind, the “cottage” estate has 43 rooms, including: three grand guest suites, 14 bathrooms, a two-story library, movie theater (and vast movie collection to boot!), indoor pool – plus a mind-blowingly large master suite with two dressing rooms, two bathrooms, a sitting room and a fitness room – all accessed via elevator.

Door County land records show the assessed value at $16 million and last year’s taxes were $139,400.

If you don’t have the funds for a bid on “Sur la Baie”, consider something a little less stately yet just as charming – a week’s vacation at “Above & Beyond” cottage rental on Washington Island, Door County. Nestled in the woods with 300 feet of private beachfront, I’d venture to say that our Wisconsin cottage experience is the next-best-most-affordable-thing to “Sur la Baie”.

Island Bread Company Kneads You!

There’s a unique feature and treasure on Washington Island! The Island Bread Company has been making artisan breads and pastries for several years now. Boy, are they dee-lish!

Owner and chief, Heidi Gilbertson, uses fresh ground whole grains that produce an amazing texture, crustiness and taste by using a wood fired brick oven. Up until early 2012, she’s operated out of a very small facility — and because she needs more space, she’s moving to the former Clover Farm Store, now home to The Red Cup.

Heidi is in desperate need of a new wood fired brick oven (total cost is $18,000). To help finance her expansion, Heidi has joined “Kickstarter” to help get out the word. Washington Island Music Festival

Washington Island hosts members of the Milwaukee Symphony the first 2 weeks in August every year for our Music Festival. Above and Beyond has had the privilege of housing one of the violinist, Tim Klabunde and his wife, MaryAnne, for the past several seasons. We have gotten to know them quite well and love going to concerts especially seeing and hearing Tim play. When Tim is not practicing or rehearsing he loves to go fishing with some of the “island guys.” He actually left his violin stand behind by mistake a couple of years ago. When we called him about it he said not to worry, he would get it next year! Tim is a member of the Prometheus Trio in Milwaukee.

Have a Cup at The Red Cup

Washington Island has its own version of Starbucks. The “Red Cup” is a cozy and unique coffee house serving up “killer coffee”, smoothies etc. as well as great pastries, bagels and sandwiches. It is an eclectic delight where islanders and visitors alike come to either sit on the charming porch or sink into a vintage couch indoors to relax and chat with each other, strangers and friends alike. There are artsy things for sale from one of a kind pieces of jewelry to hand-made shawls and pottery. This is not your average souvenir venue nor will you find your average souvenirs here! What you will find is a warm and inviting haven to have a great cup of joe and put up your feet. By the way, right next door is a terrific book store well worth a look-see.

Washington Island Overview

Washington Island has everything necessary for daily living: a supermarket, a hardware store, two gas stations, a liquor store, numerous restaurants, bank, library with internet service, two marinas, a fire department, professional medical care, two churches and a k-12 school.

Above & Beyond Cottage

This is the view of the cottage from the driveway that leads down to the residence. As you can see, the house is quite secluded; it is set-back in the woods and perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. There are stairs which lead down to the pristine rocky beach below. Extremely quiet and very private!

This is the front view of the charming cottage. It faces beautiful Lake Michigan and because of the way it is situated, it gets almost constant sunlight. Countless guests have passed their days relaxing on the deck. Lounge chairs (not shown) are included for maximum relaxation.

This is absolutely a one-of-a-kind Wisconsin cottage rental, Above & Beyond has 300 feet of private and very secluded beach. The water is Lake Michigan-crystal-clear, right through to the rocky bottom. It’s a great place to swim, fish, sunbath or just catch up on some sleep while hanging out with friends and family.
